ANNUAL AITONG MEDICAL CAMP- MASAI MARA KENYA
The sixth Annual Free Medical Camp was held at Aitong Medical Centre in the northern Mara on 4-7 December 2017. Essential screening for cervical cancer, HIV/Aids, and diabetes were conducted, as well as general medical consultations, orthopedic consultations, dental work and pediatrics. Pre-camp communications were effective in ensuring the community was well informed, and this led to an excellent turnout. The Land & Life Foundation are delighted to report that this year a total of 1200 patients received free medical care and treatment during the three-day event, an increase on the previous years
The Aitong Health Centre is based in Aitong center on the North-East border of Mara North Conservancy, 226km West of Nairobi. The community built this health center in 1993. The clinic raises KES 200,000-300,000 (USD 2,300-3,500) monthly from fees charged for services, which is used to meet all facility needs, including salaries for 11 staff and all drug supplies. This is not enough to meet its needs and obligations.
The Christian Development Fund, which supports Aitong Health Centre as well as several in the area, provides medical supplies on an irregular and unpredictable basis. The government plays a general policy implementation & supervisory role as well as providing vaccines.
The main aim of this Medical Camp is to provide capacity building services to the staff clinicians, addressing their highlighted needs of developing skills in both Maternal Child Healthcare and Dentistry. Concurrent aims included providing first-rate health care to as many members of the wider community as possible free of charge during the 3-day clinic, as well as developing systematic stock and general clinic management.
A volunteer team of medical professionals was provided by Oasis Healthcare specialists who included general practitioners; obs/gynae, dentist, pediatrician, general surgeon, nurse, general practitioner, group coordinator
We had 6 dedicated specialists (1 Gynecologists, 1 General Practitioner, 1 Pediatrician and 1 Dentists, 1 Nurse, 1 general surgeon) and a group coordinator who were kind enough to offer their services for free. Through their efforts, they managed to treat an unbelievable total of 1200 patients in only three days!
Safarilink is a kind partner on this project.
