Flights To Lewa Downs

Safarilink operates two daily scheduled flights to Lewa‚ Nanyuki and Samburu.  Safarilink is proud to be associated with the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and donates approximately 5% of the cost of each ticket to Lewa to the conservancy.  By flying to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy with Safarilink you are helping to conserve the animals and their habitat for generations to come.  Flights from Lewa to the Maasai Mara are also available.

One of Kenya’s first and most successful conservancies‚ Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is an award-winning conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Lewa Wildlife Conservancy‚ also known as Lewa Downs‚ lies in Laikipia in the foothills of Mt Kenya and has savannah plains‚ rolling hills and riverine forest.  It offers a combination of attractive scenery and superb game viewing‚ as well as a selection of lavish camps in which to stay.

The conservancy started in 1984 as the Ngare Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary with 15 black rhinos; the rhino population has risen steadily to 72 black rhinos (12% of Kenya’s black rhino population) and 65 southern white rhinos.  Lewa also has significant numbers of all the Big Five‚ as well as the five northern species: Grevy’s zebra‚ reticulated giraffe‚ Somali ostrich‚ Beisa oryx and the gerenuk.  Over 400 species of birds have been recorded here.

The conservancy offers a wide variety of activities for everyone from the keenest bird watcher to the most intrepid conservationist to the most daring adventurer.  Game drives and bird watching are a good way to start all safaris‚ while watching the animals from the wildlife blind gives visitors the chance to get close to the animals that come to drink at the marsh.  Meals and sundowners out in the bush make for a pleasant break during the day or evening.  

The conservation education centre gives students and visitors hands on experience of the environmental challenges and day-to-day operations of running a conservancy through interactive exhibits.  Visits to local schools‚ water projects and feeding baby rhinos are all options here.  And by giving a donation to the conservancy‚ it’s also possible to adopt or name a rhino.

The Safaricom Lewa Marathon takes place in June every year.  This challenging marathon – at high altitude‚ through tough terrain and past herds of animals – pits amateur runners against Kenya’s top athletes.  The exciting event attracts runners and their supporters from all over the world.  Both the marathon and tourism in the conservancy fund Lewa’s conservation projects.
